Rhododendron and Camellia Group of the Royal Horticultural Society Year Books 1982/83-1988/89

Building on the preceding years, this run of year books firmly cements the status of the publication as an important international reference for the three genera Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia.

Although still published economically, colour illustrations begin increasing in number and by the last edition of this set, the back cover also sports a colour image. In the 1984-85 edition the committee list for the Rhododendron and Camellia Group is published for the first time along with the details for the regional branches, further enhancing the recognised status of the Group as an independent entity. In addition, there is the first mention of the Photographic Competition, with the inaugural winning image reproduced inside the edition. This initiative was to lead to many members seeing their efforts grace the year books’ pages in the future.

These editions from 1982-83 – 1988-89 are presented to you for download; they represent a marvellous resource for the researcher and enthusiast alike. The Edinburgh ‘Revision of Rhododendron’ is still a hot topic evidenced by lively debate among the contributors. See here The revival of the ‘Notes’ from members serves to introduce novel propagation techniques and worthwhile comment on both new introductions and familiar varieties. By the end of this run a settled balance of articles on the three genera is being achieved thanks to the untiring persuasion of the editors.

Until now these works have only been accessible to the lucky few; the various permissions that the Group has received make these online publications freely available to all as searchable pdfs. It is of course possible to make a donation to the Group to support the continuation of its work in bringing publications such as these to widen knowledge of rhododendrons, camellia and magnolias and their history.
