Rhododendron Camellia and Magnolia Group of the Royal Horticultural Society Year Books 1990-1999

This series of year books is heralded by the announcement that RHS Council has agreed that the Group from henceforth will be known as the Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group, fully reflecting its interests in all three genera and from 1992 onwards, editions sport the RHS logo, a tradition which continues.

The set from 1990–1995 follow the production style of the preceding years but the latter editions are noticeably better produced with more colour images, and are the first at the larger format size still published today.

The 1996-97 edition took a ‘double year’ title for good reason: Lady Cynthia Postan had taken time out from her role as Editor to produce the seminal work The Rhododendron Story – a celebration of 50 years of the year book sent to members as part of their subscription instead of the usual publication in 1996. Since this important work was not numbered and to ensure the run was not interrupted the following year the title was adapted to suit.

These editions from 1990– 1999 are presented to you for download; they represent a marvellous resource for the researcher and enthusiast alike.

Until now these works have only been accessible to the lucky few; the various permissions that the Group has received make these online publications freely available to all as searchable pdfs. It is of course possible to make a donation to the Group to support the continuation of its work in bringing publications such as these to widen knowledge of rhododendrons, camellia and magnolias and their history.

The content in these publications is broad, ranging from the seriously scientific, to the day-to-day practicalities of cultivation and propagation and the wonders of hybridisation. New species were still being introduced to the gardener and just as today, taxonomic treatment was a hot topic for debate, hardiness contentious and different techniques abounding, especially with new materials becoming available. Exciting times to be reading about!
