The gardens in these lists have all been personally recommended by members of the Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group (RCMG) as gardens worth visiting to see these plants. They range from large historically important collections at the estates of those who funded the plant hunters who discovered them, to collections of more recent enthusiasts.
To be added to the list a garden must satsify the following simple criteria:
- The garden must be recommended by at least two members of the RCMG as having collections of at least one of our three genera, Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia, that are well worth visiting.
- Note that these members must be from separate memberships (i.e. not both from the same Joint or Garden membership),and they must not be directly associated with the garden.
- The garden must be open to the public, in some way, during the relevant season. This may be through regular opening, but can also include irregular openings, such as the National Garden Scheme (NGS) in the UK, and opening by appointment only.
- There must be a publicly accessible web address that leads to information about visiting the garden, including a description, contact details, directions, etc. This might be a dedicated website, or, for example, the relevant page on the NGS website.
If you are an RCMG member, and wish to recommend a garden that is not already on the list, simply send an email with brief details of the garden to
rgs@rhodogroup-rhs.org. Please send this from the email address you have registered with the RCMG.
If you know of another member who would also recommend the garden, then it would be very helpful if you could ask them to send an email also, but if not, we will do our best to ask for support within the local branch.
If you are not a member of the RCMG, and would like to suggest a garden, you are welcome to let us know, but why not join so that your vote counts: go
