Magnolias Plant Directory

Milky Way AGM

Magnolia 'Milky Way'
Lennei Alba x Mark Jury, so denudata
, and probably liliiflora
, sargentiana robusta and
mollicomata
'Lanarth'; the parentage of both parents is not totally certain.
Felix Jury, Taranaki, New Zealand, c.1975
H5
AGM (2002) 2012
Probably the fastest growing of the Jury hybrids, and likely to reach 12m by 8m.
10 year height/spread: 6m/3.5m
In the UK the upright flowers have a basal rose flush, but appear white from a distance. In New
Zealand they are pinker, resembling M.'Athene'.
The flowers are cup and saucer shaped and have an indefinable beauty with elegance and poise; up
to 20cm across; fragrant. They are more wind resistant than those of many white magnolias;
late April.
Foliage: similar to sargentiana robusta.
Recognise by: the upright growth and the flower shape.
Potentially a large tree, but beware: this plant is irresistible once
seen in flower!
