Distribution: Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan
Height: to 35m
10 year height/spread: 8m/6m
Flowers: white, to 35cm diameter
History: Discovered 1838 by Griffith. Introduced from Darjeeling to Caerhays in 1926, flowering in 1938.
Recognise by: leaves to 30cm often with some silvery indumentum. By far the commonest form in the wild.
Wild collected seedlings flower after about 14 years. Grafts flower much younger at heights of around 2m.
