Magnolia delavayi
Guizhou, Sichuan and Yunnan at 1,500-2,800m altitude.
Syn: Chinese Evergreen Magnolia
Flowers: fragrant, cup-shaped, 150-250mm wide, with nine thick, creamy white to pink tepals; short-lived, at their peak at night.
Leaves: oblong-ovate, 100-200mm long and 50-100mm wide, tough, leathery matt green, with a 50-70mm petiole.
Small evergreen tree 8-15 m in height; it grows rapidly into a dense multi-stemmed plant.
Pale to dark yellowish-brown bark.
This plant is usually grown for its foliage and grows well in alkaline soils.
A recently selected red-flowered form is becoming popular in cultivation.
