Magnolia kobus

Common throughout the forests of Japan.
Flowers: 9 tepals, 3 outer ones are short about 25mm and generally fall as the flower opens, six inner white tepals up to 100mm long, often flushed pink at the base.

Leaves: elliptic-obovate, up to 150 x 75mm.
Small deciduous tree to 23m in height.
Both the leaves and the young stems emit a distinct smell of aniseed when crushed.
It is a much heavier plant than M. stellata
.
No naturally occurring hybrids are found in the wild; however, once it is close to M. stellata, they will hybridise freely to produce M. x loebneri.
It has also been crossed with M. salicifolia to produce the M. x kewensis hybrids.
