Magnolia x loebneri 'Merrill'
stellata x kobus
Diploid 2n=38
K.Sax, Arnold Arboretum, 1939
H6
AGM (1993, 2002) 2012
A small tree to 9m by 8m
10 year height/spread: 4m/3.5m
The pure white slightly tousled flowers are up to 15cm across and have about 14 broad tepals.
They are very fragrant: April.
Foliage: very similar to M.kobus
Recognise by: the flower shape and the amount of fragrance; the twiggy tree like growth habit almost
as wide as high.
Totally reliable and easy to grow. Extremely floriferous year after year, and flowers young. The
flowers are quite frost resistant. Often wrongly called 'Dr. Merrill'. A favourite with all those who
see it. Suitable for small gardens.
