Flowers: usually pink. White forms are cultivated. To 35cm diameter.
History: Discovered 1908 by Wilson.
Introduced 1908 by Wilson, and via France to Kew in 1913. Said to have flowered in France in 1923.
Recognise by: a widely spreading tree branching from near the base. Nodding
flowers with 10-14 tepals formed down to the ground.
Wild collected seedlings have
flowered after about 12 years. Grafts flower much younger.
Cultivar: Blood Moon - a form with darker flowers than typical; tree to 15m; hardy to -18C; original tree at Strybing Arboretum, San Francisco.
Cultivar: Greta Eisenhut - looks like M. Caerhays Belle but is a softer lighter pink. It was named for Otto Eisenhuts wife in Switzerland.
