catawbiense x ponticum

Francoisi Brothers, Belgium before 1846

AGM (1993) 2012

H7

Shrub growing to 4m or more

Flowers: Lax trusses of about 17 funnel-shaped flowers, 50mm long x 50-70mm wide, rich mauve with a ray of brown crimson spots on the dorsal lobe and unevenly petaloid stamens

Late May-June

Not scented

Foliage: Elepidote. Leaves are oblong-obovate, 125mm long x 30-50mm wide, dull, dark green above, hairless below

Other Information: Although raised by the Francoisi brothers, this rhododendron was introduced by Louis van Houtte. Free flowering; the petaloid stamens make the flower a semi double. Good for hedging and screening, not invasive as its R. ponticum parentage might suggest. Commercially available
