Height: shrub 1-14m.
10 year height/spread: 1.5m/1.5m
Flowers: lax or rounded trusses of 5-10 white sometimes flushed rose to 7cm
across, occasionally flecked purple sometimes with a green flare, highly scented.
May/June.
Introduced: 1887 by Delavay from Yunnan and collected recently many times.
Distribution: NE Burma and widespread in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, 2000 - 4000m.
Recognise by: elliptic or ovate matt wax coated olive green leaves with a
rounded base, and a pale green petiole; the widely campanulate scented flowers;
the style having white or yellowish glands along its whole length.
Epithet: ornamental.
An easily grown scented species even on poor soils. Free flowering from
young. Likes almost any position other than dense shade. Some collections at
least appear not to be growing tall - 1.2m/2m after 10 years.
