Flowers: tight trusses of 4-10 off white through rose flowers sometimes with flecks.
May / June.
Introduced: before 1925 from the Yokohama Nursery Co.
Distribution: C.Honshu, Japan, 500-550m.
Recognise by: distinctive narrow recurved foliage with persistent perrulae, glabrous
above with a thick white to brown indumentum when mature.
Epithet: after the Japanese botanist, Makino.
Harder to establish than most of this section-may prefer less acid soils - but its striking
foliage makes it most desirable.
